Happy Ten Years, CM

In celebration of Community Magazine’s nostalgic look back in this Tenth Anniversary Edition, my first Divorce Talk (An Introduction, May 2012) is reprinted below. Some things have changed. I’m older and have now been practicing forty-four years. We’re living through a surreal global pandemic. And breaking news gets more bizarre each day. Some things, however, really haven’t changed, making the subject of my first Divorce Talk as relevant today as it was more than eight years ago An Introduction In my thirty five years as a family lawyer I have represented [...]

Movies in Quarantine

“Paying alimony is like feeding hay to a dead horse.” Groucho Marx, movie actor. “I have learned that, not diamonds, but divorce lawyers are a girl’s best friend.” Zsa Zsa Gabor, movie actress. Movies have been a popular diversion during the pandemic. What better time to see how movies have handled divorce through the years? A popular topic since the advent of silent movies, A Bill of Divorcement (1922) was one of the first. Ten years later the remake starred John Barrymore and Katherine Hepburn and sound. The movie made Hepburn an instant star. Divorce movies-comedies, dramas, foreign films-have been made [...]

Covid and the Courts

As you can imagine, the pandemic has impacted the Family Court as much as it has every other aspect of life. However, through the leadership of Chief Justice Rabner and Judge Grant, the Administrative Director of the Courts, the court system has been functioning reasonably well under the circumstances. Initially, judges and court staff were not permitted to be physically in the courthouse. Currently, no more than 25% of judges and staff are allowed in the courthouse at any given time. As a result, mail was not being processed promptly and efficiently. This led to the implemen-tation of a new online system [...]

Pro Bono

Lawyers share a deep sense of responsibility to provide legal services to those who cannot afford to retain counsel. The Legal Aid Society of Monmouth County is celebrating its seventieth year of enlisting volunteers from the Monmouth Bar Association to do just that. The Legal Aid Society is governed by a hardworking Board of Trustees, comprised of lawyers and lay people who give countless hours of their time to administer the program, screen cases, enlist volunteer attorneys, assign cases to volunteers, and obtain feedback when each case is finished. That information is taken into account in evaluating how the program can [...]

In-Home Social Distancing

We are all living with numerous added sources of stress these days. Some people have lost jobs. Some have health or life-threatening jobs. Children are home twenty-four hours a day. Home schooling still has several weeks to go. Hospitals are over extended. And, people are getting very sick. Some are dying. When these stressors are added to the emotional upheaval that inevitably comes with the deterioration of a marriage it can create the potential for disaster. Lost income can mean the inability to pay bills, which can trigger the loss of assets or, at least, the very real fear that assets could [...]

Parenting Time in a Coronavirus World

We are living through a scary time. The pandemic has us confined to home for the most part. Covid-19 is a highly contagious, insidious disease that is often fatal. Although its impact is disproportionately felt in older and medically vulnerable populations, no segment of the world’s population is safe. Children, too, are at risk. We are encouraged – in fact, required - to distance ourselves from others to slow the spread of the disease and to “flatten the curve”. Health and safety are, as they always should be, our primary concerns. And so, how [...]
